ABOUT ME
I have always been curious.
Those who know me well would agree that I am an “eternal student”. Math and science were logical and linear, and easy for me – so when the time came to make a decision about what to study after high school, I chose to do a Bachelor of Applied Science, Civil Engineering at the University of Waterloo. As part of my program, I participated in cooperative work placements and had the opportunity to be a teaching assistant to first year students in two courses: Engineering Drafting and Civil Engineering Surveying.
After earning my degree in Civil Engineering, my desire to explore took me across the Atlantic Ocean where I taught English as a Second Language (ESL) to adults in both London, England and Rome, Italy. I had the privilege to interact with a diverse group of people from all over the world - Mongolia, Thailand, Romania, Bahrain, Colombia, Japan, and the list goes on. This experience taught me about peer-to-peer connection and learning as well as the connection between instructor and student; it taught me about different learning preferences, strengths and abilities.
After spending five years teaching and travelling through Europe, I decided to return to Canada. I wanted to explore my creativity and decided to study photography at Ryerson, which eventually parlayed into studying graphic design at Humber College. Working with these artistic mediums and connecting with my inner artistic taught me about engagement and captivating an audience.
I had the privilege of working at Humber College as a Digital and Multimedia Specialist and Instructional Designer for 8 years. Currently, I work at Seneca Polytechnic as a Senior Instructional Designer. These positions have enabled me to apply my diverse skills to develop beautiful and engaging content for online courses, contribute to curriculum development, and participate in education innovation. I have been on amazing teams and collaborated with incredibly gifted and dedicated colleagues.
Over the years, through professional development opportunities, I have acquired valuable knowledge in measurable learning outcomes, authentic assessment, Universal Design for Learning, differentiated instruction and assessment, and accessibility. I am particularly drawn to what DuCharme-Hansen B.A. & Dupin-Bryant P.A. (2005) describe as “humanizing” the online learning environment.
In addition to developing online courses, I am passionate about inclusion and accessibility and have taught courses in and done many training workshops with faculty and staff at both institutions.
My biggest asset is my ability to skillfully balance logical and creative thinking. Are you looking for someone who thinks critically, is an exceptional problem-solver and is creative? Someone who is a questioner and a solution-finder? Someone who always has an eye on optimization and improvement? Someone who is passionate about learner engagement, inclusivity and connection? Are you looking for someone with considerable education and work experience in teaching and learning, but also a desire to grow and know more? Lastly, are you looking for someone who is curious, enthusiastic, courageous and wants to make a difference? Then, you are looking for me!
